Custom Metal Roofing & Waterproofing Solutions for Modern Homes in Austin, TX

Thinking Outside the Box for a Custom Home in Austin

Written By Cody Profitt

At Comanche Roofing, we love a challenge—especially when it comes to custom homes. Right now, we’re working with a custom home builder in Austin, Texas, installing a mix of metal, shingles, and TPO flat roofing on a modern home. And like most modern homes, this one comes with its fair share of tricky details.

One thing about modern architecture: there’s not a lot of room for error. The overhangs are minimal, fascia is almost nonexistent, and there are plenty of flat-to-vertical transitions that require careful waterproofing. Throughout this job, we’ve done a lot of custom flashing work to make sure bump-outs and unexpected transitions stay watertight.

But today, I want to highlight one particular detail that required some serious out-of-the-box thinking: a custom separation drip edge metal piece for the soffit underhang.

The Challenge: A Drywall Soffit That Needs to Stay Dry

This builder wanted to use drywall for the soffit, which is not something you see every day. The problem? Drywall isn’t waterproof. If any water makes its way to the edges, it’s going to wick moisture, break down over time, and create a mess. That’s where we came in.

The Solution: A Custom-Built Drip Edge

Instead of telling the builder it wouldn’t work, we figured out how to make it work—and make it look good too.

I bent a custom metal profile that does several things at once:

  1. Drip Ledge for Protection – This piece installs before the fascia and creates a drip edge, keeping water from running down and soaking the soffit.
  2. Built-in J-Trim for Drywall – The ½-inch drywall soffit slides right into a clean J-trim edge, eliminating the need for extra trim pieces.
  3. Hidden Fasteners – No exposed screws or nails. Everything is tucked behind the J-trim for a seamless, modern look.
  4. Integrated Lighting Space – The builder wanted a continuous LED strip under the fascia. I designed this piece with a built-in gap so the lighting can be installed perfectly.
  5. Full Waterproofing – With this design, the soffit stays dry, the fascia stays clean, and the whole system looks sleek and intentional.
